The Extras were without many of their usual backs for their encounter with Kettering. Most of the backs Ampthill did have were forced into playing out of position. The forwards had their own fair share of problems when they realised they were up against a much bigger and better drilled pack.
By half time two unconverted tries separated the two teams in Kettering’s favour.
The Extras suffered a further blow when Kevin Smith suffered concussion after a tackle and had to leave the field.
In the dying seconds the Extras came very close to scoring when Ian Browning made a break up the wing only to be stopped yards short. For once there were black shirts in support but it wasn’t to be, the ball was lost to the opposition whom promptly kicked to touch. The referee blew his whistle to seal the Kettering victory. The free beers for five wins in a row from club chairman Harry Cornforth were not to be.
All in all keeping the score down to 10-0 was not a bad score considering the above factors.
