The Extras had an unfortunate start to the new year with their unfruitful trip to Lutterworth.
The surface underfoot could be likened to playing on a giant wet sponge. This suited the well drilled Lutterworth pack far more than it did the Extras who prefer to play fifteen man attack rugby.
The first Lutterworth try came from an interception when skipper Dave Ratcliffe passed the ball to his inside centre Tom Gray, Tom called ‘cancel’, this fell on deaf ears. Although the Lutterworth back line where all offside they were awarded the first try.
The Extras did however come close to scoring a few times. On one such occasion Gavin Griffith was grounded yards short of the try line, a Lutterworth player then lay on the wrong side of the ball preventing it from being recycled. The ref then blew for a penalty and to many people's amazement he awarded it against the attacking team for not releasing.
Lutterworth’s next points came in the form of a
converted penalty try. Ian Browning found himself in a race to his own try line
after a Lutterworth player kicked the ball through. Having deemed to use his
elbow the ref award his the home team a penalty try.
In the dying moments of the game Mark McKinlay charged at the opposition from a penalty, was tackled and again a Lutterworth player then lay on the wrong side of the ball. Penalty Lutterworth.
