Ampthill Extras 8 – Hertford 3rd XV 73
Slaughtered !
No, the above score-line is not a misprint. The Extras got hammered by one of the best sides they’ve played outside of tour fixtures. The Hertford ‘third’ team were out on the pitch warming up an hour before kick off looking young and wearing club tracksuits. Not a great in for the home team gathered in the clubhouse watching Anastasia on the television awaiting the full complement to arrive.
It took just a few moments before Hertford scored their first try with their backs far out pacing Ampthill’s. The Extras hit back with a rare Chris Hopgood drop goal scored jus days before his *!*%$*£*! birthday.
From here despite some great spells of defence from the Extras it was a one sided affair with the Hertford side looking dangerous every time they got the ball with any open space. The Extras for their part never gave up. They even had the better of the visiting pack in the scrums, lineouts, rucks and mauls. Justin Cobley jumped well at two taking a lot of clean possession. The front row union of Paul Rigby, Gez Ingarfield & Jason Massingham were solid in the scrums and the whole pack were getting well stuck in the lose.
The Extras were rewarded for their determination with a second half try for second row John Roberts.
The team could not have worked harder than they did for the eighty minutes but were just overpowered by the skills of the Hertford side.
It’s now three losses in a row for the Extras. They will be aiming to make amends as soon as they can
