Northampton Old Scouts 12 – Ampthill Extras 54
Baden
Powell’s Boys Take a Whopping.
For the second week running the Extras traveled north to play a Northampton team. This week it was the turn of Old Scouts to host the visitors. The Extras had every intention of avenging the defeat from the last game of last season.
It was a much younger side than usual that the Extras faced for this encounter. Two players short the Old Scouts borrowed Gary Bass and Ian Browning from the Extras to make more of a game for the afternoon.
The Extras had much the better in the backs and soon took the lead with a Paul Ratcliffe try skinning his opposite number after taking a clearance kick from the Scout’s defence. Paul Ratcliffe again scored to increase the lead. Then a flurry of tries came for the Extras. Steve Marsden with some powerful running crossed the line, as did Richard Beasley breaking from the back of the scrum. Sean Jones was also rewarded with a try after some great support work.
Sean Jones spent ten minutes in the sin bin along with an Old Scouts player after a fracas. Unsighted by the referee, Sean it seems was unjustly the recipient of his yellow card.
There were injuries to Paul Saunders (ankle) and Tim Ames who managed to injure himself moments after coming on as a substitute. With both subs used the Extras went down to fourteen players when Kevin Smith went to play for the Ampthill 2nd XV who were themselves down to fourteen players.
Old Scouts scored two
tries. The second was a well deserved solo effort by Ian Browning who was
playing fly half for the Old Scouts.
