Colworth House 10 - Ampthill Extras 17
After having rained all night and morning it looked very much as if the Extras trip to Sharnbrook would be cancelled at the eleventh hour. A call from Colworth stalwart Barry Beaver confirmed the game was to go ahead.
The gods were looking favourably at rugby as kick off approached the rain stopped and out came the sun. Colworth’s well maintained pitch meant conditions turned out to be just fine for the afternoon’s duel.
The Extras really didn’t play to their full potential in the first half and saw Colworth take the lead with a try. Ian Browning responded for the Extras with a try before half time.
Phil Stanton scored a second half try as the Extras started to take control. Phil then went on to perform in the most memorable incident of the afternoon. Phil caught one of the Colworth second row players with his elbow, the large figure in green took exception to this and charged towards Phil. Phil, seeing the look in his opposition's eyes then took flight, running away down the pitch shouting ‘I didn’t mean it, I didn’t mean it’. Eventually after Phil had been found some three fields away, he was brought back to the pitch to receive a yellow card and spend a little time on the sideline reflecting on his act of cowardice.
In Phil’s absence the Extras scored another try through colt Ben. The final whistle saw the Extras seventeen point to ten victors.
In true Colworth tradition port was drunk after the match courtesy of Barry Beaver and 50th birthday boy Brian Geary.
