Ampthill Extras 34 – Hanson Brick 7
It was midweek action for the Extras as they took on the travelling Hanson Brick company for the Ampston Brick Trophy in a floodlit evening match at Dillingham Park.
Despite the extremely wet conditions Ampthill handled the ball superbly and won the game by a score-line that does not do the part that the opposition played justice.
Richard Beasley was first to cross the line after an attack by the Extras’ backs. John Lasbry was next to cross over and an Ian Browning conversion put the home team twelve points ahead.
Led by Tom Gray the home team played some entertaining rugby and before long John Lasbry crossed the line to put the Extras seventeen points ahead. From the restart Tom Gray caught the ball and went on a run, executed a hand off that Mike Tyson would have been proud of, and offloaded the ball to Ian Browning who ran in a try.
At half time the game was far from over as Ampthill would be changing ends and playing up hill for the remaining forty minutes.
With the slope to their advantage it was Hanson Brick that scored the first try of the second half but it was the handling skills of the home team that led to further tries for John Lasbry and Luke Stanbridge to give the Extras a satisfactory victory.
