Ampthill Extras 61 – Potton 5

The Potton Farce.

Nobody in club rugby wants to see a small village club fold. Unfortunately this may be the fate that becomes Potton if they continue to raise less than a dozen players for a rugby match.

Upon arrival to Amphill Rugby Club, Potton claimed to have a compliment of twelve players. Ampthill offered them two to make their numbers up to fourteen.

As both teams took to the pitch it became apparent that Potton did not originally have twelve players but had only ten. The match thus started with Ampthill’s fifteen playing Potton’s twelve.

It was clear from the start that there was only going to be one winner in this match. Their lack numbers did not prevent Potton from trying to make a match of it. They showed determination at the moments that they did get possession. They even scored a first half try.

The Extras built up a steady score throughout the game without really trying. Try scores included Rob Campbell, crossing the line no less than four times, a brace each for Jack Wilison  and Paul Rigby and one try a piece for Simon Robinson, Ian Browning and even Brian Todd.

Liam Duffin, still refusing to score this season, struggled not to score one himself.

The game ended on a bad note when the referee abandoned the game after constant dissent from the Potton ranks who felt hard done by with some of the official’s decisions.
