Ampthill Extras 31 – Colworth 24
The Extras left it a little late to produce their first home win of the season playing against a much-rejuvenated Colworth & Sharnbrook rugby side.
As they have in all their games this season the Extras were first to score when Jack Wilison touched down for a five nil lead. From this point Colworth playing down Ampthill’s steep slope, responded with no fewer than three tries as the Extras defence seemed at times non existent.
Skipper Liam Duffin managed to cross the line but could not mage to ground the ball. The Extras stayed encamped on the Colworth line until big prop Jason Massingham charged for the line knocking all in front of him flying to then collapse on the ball for Ampthill’s second try.
At the break the prospect of playing downhill gave the Extras every confidence of turning the game around in the second half for a victory.
In the second half scrum half Phil Stanton, jinked and turned amongst the green of the opposition and conjured up two tries. The Extras were now well and truly back in the game.
The Extras suffered a blow when centre, Kevin Smith, landed on his head after a tackle and suffered severe concussion.
Simon Robinson scored a try towards the end of the game to seal an exciting victory for Ampthill.
It was only later found out the extent of Kevin’s injury. Bedford hospital was very close to transferring Kevin to Adenbrooks specialist hospital in Cambridge, but fortunately they found his brain in the end!!
It was good to see Barry Beevor supporting Colworth and supplying the port!!
