Towcester 3rd XV 27 - Ampthill Extras 24

Man over too much for fourteen men Extras.

This was a total reversal from the beginning of the season when Towcester turned up at Ampthill with only thirteen players whilst Ampthill boasted six substitutes.

It was Ampthill’s turn, for the first time this season, to turn up with less than fifteen players.

It was a bad start for the Extras as Towcester ran in a try just a few minutes after kick off. It looked as if Towcester might run away with a huge win with their one man advantage. The Extras dug in hard and with a huge work rate competed against Towcester.

Shortly after Towcester had scored a second try a great effort by Shaun Wood that saw him pick up his own chipped through ball to score a try.

Towcester scored a third before none other than Brian Todd swerve, side stepped and dummied his way over the line, from all of two metres.

At half time the Extras believed in themselves and came out for the second half with real determination.

Despite having the majority of possession the Extras struggled getting to the breakdown. Towcester took advantage of this to score a fourth try. Shaun Wood  & Rob Hill responded with the former chipping the ball through for the latter to collect and score. After this it was all Extras. Shaun Wood crossed the line for the Extras’ fourth try leaving them just three points behind their opponents.

Ampthill spent the rest of the match in the Towcester twenty two but just could not score the decisive try.
