Ampthill Extras 34 – Northampton Old Scouts 3rd XV 33
With minimal casualties from the first week of the season the Extras boasted more subs than the German Navy.
Facing much tougher opposition than the week before it was not long before the Ampthill Extras were huddled under their own posts awaiting an Old Scouts conversion. Five nil down the home side soon hit back with a try of their own from Gareth Williams. Old Scouts replied with two of their own, picking off handling errors made by the Extras. Leigh Clark hit back with a try that showed some of his bygone first team form before the break at half time.
Playing up hill in the second half the Extras had all the hard work to do. The Extras’ subs were getting their fare share of action as players were dropping like flies. Gary Brill was next to cross the line catching a little chip and then grounding the ball. Gary constantly appeared everywhere in support throwing questions over Tom Gray’s inclusion in the team once available.
Jack Willison and Tom Read also scored tries, both cancelled out by Northampton’s own. With just two minutes left and six points down Ampthill were on the attack, Liam ‘No Tries’ Duffin picked the ball up just yards from under the posts. Breaking free of a maul the Extras pack drove over the line for Liam ‘One Try’ Duffin’s first score in five hundred and five days.
Shaun Wood converted to give the Extras a one point lead just prior to the referee blowing the final whistle.
