Northampton Casuals 2nd XV 15 – Ampthill Extras 12
Often when the Extras lose the forwards can be heard blaming the backs and the backs blaming the forwards. When they start mingling with each other they blame the ref. On this occasion the ref wasn’t to blame for the loss but was to blame for spoiling what could have been a great game.
The game finished two tries each to the two sides. It would have been more for both had the referee allowed rugby to be played instead of continuously blowing his whistle to a crowd of thirty mystified players.
There were some great moments for the Extras. John Kitchiner appeared well out of position to take a pass from behind a scrum and crash through to score.
Ian Jones also managed to cross the line and score for the Extras. There were tries denied for both sides due to some dubious refereeing decisions.
The Extras had a chance to finish the game as victors with a rolling maul just short of the try line. The only thing stopping them was the Casuals player lying on the ground with his arms wrapped around the legs of a driving Ampthill player and the referees’ complete lack of bottle in dealing with it.
