Ampthill Extras 45 – Olney 3rd XV 7

Extras three from three

It was three home games and three wins for the Extras after this magnificent display of rugby at Dillingham Park. For eighty minutes the Extras played superb support rugby with the ball often going through several sets of hands with very little spillage.

The new, fitter Jason Massingham, trying to make headlines on the back pages rather than the front of the local papers played a stormer. Jason and Justin Cobley lead the charge in the forwards regularly breaking the gain line. Justin was first on the score sheet. He touched down after a forward drive. Ian Browning weaved his way through the Olney defence to score Ampthill’s second. Paul Rigby back in the second row spot completed the trio of first half tries. Surprising even himself he made a twenty yard run, the Olney players in his way appeared to part as he ran through to score.

In the second half the Extras continued the pressure. From within their own twenty two a line out was won by the Extras, the ball was shipped wide, booted downfield, caught by winger Paul Ratcliffe and touched down for a try. Jamie Dix, playing at centre scored a second half try and there were a further two for Justin Cobley. Justin’s third, and jug penalised try was gifted as the Olney back completely bottled it as the giant Cobley ran at him.

With there having been very little in the way of rain in recent months the ground has been left hard and dusty. It was grazed knees and elbows that the players left the pitch having left much of their skin out on the field.
