Ampthill Extras 7 – Ampthill 2nd XV 10

Extras take on the Seconds.

On Friday evening neither the Extras nor the second XV had a fixture for the next day. It was thus decided that the two teams would play each other to provide some kind of entertainment at the rugby club. The Extras, with little to lose, were well up for the challenge. The same could not be said for the Twos who had a number of players that did not turn up for the challenge. Four players were leant to the ‘Twos’ to make a more even contest.

The game was fairly even from the start, the encounter good natured but competitive. The Ampthill Twos’ centre, Stubbs, scored the first try early in the first half. A solo effort, he ran through Jamie Dix to score.

The next time Stubbs got the ball to attack, Jamie made certain of his tackle. The result was a clash of heads. Jamie had to leave the field for the remainder of the game and Stubbs followed shortly after.

With the main threat to the Extras off the field it looked as if the Extras would grind out a victory. This was not to be the case.

Tom Gray scored an early second half try that was converted by Shaun Wood. From here on it was all Extras in attack but no points to show for it.

The Seconds, knowing they would struggle to score a try against Extras decided to kick a penalty mid way through the second half that they duly scored. The Extras were still unable to score and the result was a 13 – 10 victory to the Seconds.
