Extras turn over the Brigade

Ampthill Extras XV 15 – Bedfordshire Fire Brigade 12

Ampthill Extras took on the Bedfordshire Fire Service XV on a floodlit Dillingham Park pitch on a Wednesday evening and turned out victors in a hard fought contest.

The Extras had a whole host of stars back in action with Brian Geary, Gav Griffith and Dave Tomkins all playing a part. The turn out was good for the home side with many of the local shops closed the availability was good.

The brigade lacked many of their regular players with only one of the Pugh brothers playing they were also missing their Captain Flack, along with other absentees Cuthbert, Dibble and Grubb.

However, the brigade could boast, along with Pugh jnr and Barley McGrew such talent as Wilison, Beasley and Stanbridge.

The brigade started on fire. After just ten minutes they had built up a twelve point lead, cutting through the Extras’ defence and scoring two tries. It took the Extras a little while to find their feet before Liam ‘the claw’ Duffin scored a try in his first game back on the shop floor after a month with the blue collar Extras’ management.

Leigh Clark was next to score after a great backs display. The Brigade’s fire was now nearly put out.

The half time break saw the Extras just two points down with all to play for in the second half.

The Extras come back was complete when Ian Browning, after a hard evening’s graft got himself a well deserved try.

Tony Wilison was grateful for his second retirement game and has promised no more retirement games until his retirement from the Mid Beds Allotment Society in mid November. We wish Tony the best of luck in spending our hard earned taxes over the next few years.
