Daventry 3rd XV 12 - Ampthill Extras 15

Ampthill Extras travelled to Daventry seeking their first league win of the season and found it.

Gareth Williams, playing fly half, scored a try in the first few minutes to give the Extras the lead. The Extras looked much the stronger team but allowed Daventry to get a break away try back to make it one a piece.

Hooker Dave Tomkins was the next to score for Ampthill when he cleaned up loose ball, won by Daventry from a line out and broke through to score.

Despite being a man down when captain Liam Duffin was sin-binned the Extras still had the upper hand. Big Justin Cobley crashed over the line to give Ampthill a three tries to one lead. Tom Read’s conversion was disallowed as the referee deemed the ball to have been taken from the wrong place.

At half time, despite it being a league fixture, the referee (or Dave as he was known as by some of the Daventry team) allowed Daventry to make several substitutions as the home team took advantage of their colts match being postponed. Davs had now injected a little pace into their ranks and started the second half much stronger.

The Extras maintained their control of the match and despite several good efforts, further substations and a try from the home team, held on to win the match 15 points to 12.

There was a welcome return for Mark Loan who returned after a few weeks out with a broken hand.
