Ampthill Extras 64 – Daventry 3rd XV 7
This match against Davs was far more one sided than the previous encounter between the two teams a few weeks before.
The Extras controlled the game for the entire eighty minutes with Ampthill’s forwards especially dominant. The big guns of the home team continuously battered the visitors keeping them busy in defence and deprived of possession.
The forwards were rewarded with tries for Adam Wilson, Gez Ingarfield and Darren Oatley – the front row union. Darren scored moments after being denied a genuine ‘fifty yarder’ after the referee adjudged a crossing offence to having taken place. Even Big Daz would have struggled to exaggerate the run he’d put in for this effort.
Gareth Williams, Matt Troiano and Darren Jones all scored a try a piece in the backs and centre John Kitchiner scored a hat-trick to bolster the score. A week after being denied a try at Stokwood Park winger Richard Mardle felt robbed of his try after the referee award a penalty try for a tackling offence committed against him as he score.
Four conversions by Darren Jones and two from Tom Read took Extras’ tally to sixty four points.
New boy Josh made his Extras debut on the wing.
Later in the evening John Kithiner was presented with the newly resurrected Roy Duffin Memorial ‘Extra of the Year’ for 2005, an award well deserved.
