Northampton BBOBs 2nd XV 41 – Ampthill Extras 0
This glorious September afternoon was to be the start of the Extras’ campaign to gain promotion from their league in their first ever ‘league’ match of their thirty year history.
That was the plan. By half past four the Extras were slumped at the bottom of the league table. What went wrong? Well, for starters it was far too hot which made running around rather tiresome. Secondly, the referee showed no bias to the visiting team despite them having the much smarter kit. But the largest factor hindering the Extras was that the team they faced had been training together in the weeks prior to this match. Though this wasn’t cricket, it just wasn’t cricket.
No tries for Ampthill but Dean Johnson, a winger in prop’s clothing, came close. There were debuts for Chris Day and Ben Potter. Both had good games but are young and clever so won’t be around for long as they are off to university. Please, any academically challenged, rugby talented youngsters get in touch if they wish to join the team.
