Ampthill Extras 33 – St Neots 22
Daventry 3rd XV called off their East Midlands 4 Merit Table fixture away at Ampthill during the week giving the Extras a 20 nil victory before they even got out of bed.
A pool fixture was re-arranged against a St Neots side mixed up of first, second and third team players.
The Extras started well and after some good support Derek Welton crossed the line for what was to be the first of his two tries that afternoon.
After scoring his second try, Derek Welton left the pitch claiming his son, who was watching on the sideline, had injured himself and needed his father’s immediate attention. Del then left the pitch in what was one of the most blatant cases of ‘jug avoidance’ seen in a long while.
The third try came for Andy Weeks after some great interplay between Weeks and winger Richard Mardle.
In the second half Leigh Clark grounded the ball over the line in what appeared, from a few feet away, to look as if the ball was dropped instead of being legally grounded, a weird optical illusion, no doubt.
Leigh kicked three conversions, two of which were from positions close to the touchline. Darren Jones kicked a fourth conversion for the Extras.
Substitute Donk steamrollered his way over the try line flinging all those in front of him out of the way.
St Neots had a lot of quick youngsters on their team and a particularly fast winger, something the Extras’ found too difficult to cope with on occasions. The visitors scored one try in the first half and three in the second to make for a really exciting contest.
