Bedford Queens 2nd XV 14 - Ampthill Extras 5

There was no surprise that, on a week when Queens’ first team didn’t have a match, Bedford Queens 2nd XV fielded a strong team with seven substitutes. As it turned out, despite being riddled with first team players the Queens’ team only just beat the Extras and that was thanks to two crucial try scoring decisions controversially made by the referee.

The Extras, with a strong wind behind them, took the lead quite early on with a Chris Denton try. The lead could have been extended had the attempt by Gareth Williams not been disallowed by the referee. Matters weren’t helped when Kitch had to leave the pitch after clashing his head with team-mate Chris Day’s knee.

At the turnaround, Ampthill knew they would be struggling against the strong wind. Queens took the lead after their winger cut open the Extras’ defence to set up their first try that was duly converted. Despite battling hard the Extras could do nothing to breach the Queen’s defence. A second try for Queens towards the end of the match put an Ampthill victory out of reach.
