Old Northamptonians 10 - Ampthill Extras 24

Most of the Extras that travelled up the M1 could not remember the last time the Extras had come to ONs and travelled back south with a victory.  But this trip was to be fruitful for the Extras.

Though ONs could not boast their usual contingent of students and first and second team ringers they were still a side that would come out on to the pitch to warm up and then return to their changing room for a pep talk before returning out for the kick off. This is a habit that has increasingly frustrated the Extras who in their quest for discovering their ultimate nonchalant social counterparts are being increasingly hindered by ‘those that train’.

From the kick off Ampthill started strong with the forwards doing the donkey-work well and the backs looking both sharp in attack and defence.  John Roberts was first to cross the line with the help of some strong forwards work.   Derek Welton and centre John Kitchener also scored tries. There was a second from John Roberts who scored in response to being told he was about to be substituted.  Dougie Parks and Gareth Williams each scored one conversion in what turned out to be a good performance for the Extras.
