Ampthill Extras 17 – Luton 3rd XV 12
Ampthill Extras came out victors in a tightly fought contest between two local rivals. Ampthill played the first half up hill and went on the attack from the start of the match. Gareth Williams made a good run but was stopped short of the line. The ball was recycled by the home team and Leigh Clark managed to spin the ball out to Liam Duffin who ran and dived over the line to score his first try of the season.
Kitch extended the lead a little later when he ran over the try line to score the Extras’ second try of the match. Luton who failed to score in the first half came out fighting in the second. They got themselves back into the match after an up-and-under was collected by a Luton player who then ran in to score. The Extras responded when a backs move resulted in full back, Rob Hill, running in a try, also his first of the season.
As the clock ticked down towards the end of the game Luton scored a second try when despite the Ampthill forwards trying to hold him up, the Luton number 8 managed to ground the ball over the line.
Luton would certainly have had more attacking opportunities if it wasn’t for the relentless tackling of open-side flanker Andy Carvell.
Leigh Clark was twice denied conversion scores by the woodwork and the Extras finished 17 points to 12 winners.
