Huntingdon 3rd XV 7 - Ampthill Extras 47
The score suggests an easy romp for the Extras but this was far from the case. The Extras made hard work of the task before them. This with the determined defence by the veteran Staggers kept the score much lower than it could have been.
The most notable moment of the match was John ‘Scouser’ Roberts try that wasn’t to be. Roberts had somehow got himself at the back of an impressive Extras rolling maul. The maul, along with John, crossed the try line. All John had to do to score was drop to the ground to bag five points. Instead he looked up, saw the rugby posts of another pitch that backed onto the one being played on, and charged off to ground the ball on the deserted field behind. The referee, quite rightly and much to the amusement of the other twenty nine players on the pitch, blew his whistle and awarded the home team a twenty two metre drop out.
Chris Day scored a try from the middle of a maul after all the defenders seemed to fall away and let him through.
Darren Jones bagged a brace as did fellow centre Kitch. There were also tries for Terry Nelson and Leigh Clark. Leigh Clark slotted over six conversions.
