It had been many years since the Ampthill Extras had travelled west to Aylesbury. On this occasion the weather was more suited to the native ducks than it was for a Saturday afternoon game of rugby.
After three days of rain, the pitch at Aylesbury was like a green sponge. The first half saw sixteen wet and muddy men trudging from one scrum or lineout to another occasionally interrupted by an outbreak of running rugby.
At half time a nil nil draw was worryingly looking the most likely outcome.
The second half saw an improvement in the Ampthill scrum. Both teams shared a number of opportunities to edge into the lead but must moves involving more than three passes would result in a knock-on due to the very wet wet conditions.
The Extras eventually took the lead when Ian Campbell touched down after the ball was won by Ampthill in a scrum just short of the Aylesbury try line.
Ian Browning scored a the second Extras' try of the afternoon, reward for his strong running all afternoon. Darren Jones successfully converted the try to make the final score twelve nil to the Extras.
